How to Maximize Space

Let’s put things into perspective….

Living in a cramped apartment unit works well for young, usually single, people living in the city. It’s not hard to see why. A small apartment means significantly lower rent and utilities, less upkeep, and easier maintenance. It’s perfect for a busy on-the-go lifestyle.

If you are planning to start a family (or if you have one already), however, the amount of space is a huge consideration when buying a home for the first time. There needs to be more than one bedroom and bathroom depending on the number of kids you plan to have. Hosting Thanksgiving, Christmas dinner plenty other occasions would become a major part of life as well so it pays to have a huge kitchen, dining area and living room for entertaining guests.

Maximize space

Unfortunately, with population growth showing no signs of slowing down and real estate prices getting higher and higher, having a bigger space for your own home has become much harder and even more expensive than ever before.

There’s no denying that houses have become smaller for the same price, and to cope, there has been a growing trend among designers, builders and homeowners alike toward finding ways to maximize space to make the places we live in look and feel bigger than they seem.

Below are some ways to make good use of space and make it more livable:

1.) Minimalism

If you regularly frequent home improvement websites, you probably noticed the word minimalism being used a lot lately. But what does it really mean? Basically, minimalism is a movement based on the philosophy of less is more. It’s a philosophy that has taken over fashion, art, and design recently.

When it comes to home building, living minimally means having less furniture and using more subdued designs to reduce clutter to free up space and make it look bigger.

2.) Use white

Colors can have a huge effect on how we can perceive spaces. For instance, a soft neutral green can be calming while gold can make the place look opulent. When it comes to making a space bigger, however, nothing beats white as the color of choice for home designers.

White is brighter and more reflective than any other color so white walls are perfect for making space feel more open and airy.

3.) Light it up!

Allowing natural light to come into your home can open up space and make it look larger.  This can be done by adding windows or making them bigger. However, if larger windows are not possible, playing with light fixtures to mimic natural light can do the trick.

4.) Use Mirrors

Mirrors can be used to create an illusion of depth and a larger space. Use different mirror sizes and put them at appropriate angles to create different focal points.

5.) Use Multifunctional Furniture!

Subscribing to a minimalist philosophy to maximize space requires you to buy less furniture. It becomes important then to look for something that will serve at least two purposes, so you wouldn’t have to sacrifice convenience for a bigger space.

6.) Employ the Help of a Professional

Planning spaces could be overwhelming work. That’s why we recommend getting a professional builder and designer to plan home spaces to avoid costly mistakes.
